Confessions of an overthinker

Image
Do you often find yourself knowing what you want to do, but you struggle to take action? It is a common dilemma, where our minds create mental barriers fueled by overthinking:  "The idea is not good enough" "There is no time" "It won't work anyway" "What should I learn before starting to work on this new idea?" These thoughts lead to a vicious cycle unknowingly created in the mind, which rewards inaction and stifles execution.   Reflecting on what EITF means to me (Shivam) , It is three individuals breaking free of this cycle, demonstrating that execution becomes manageable once we remove the fear of failure. I found that this empowering message resonated throughout many EITF interviews, irrespective of the interviewees' backgrounds, cultures, or industries. I also observed that the experts view failures as learning opportunities and had used small, early-stage achievements as motivation to fuel their journey. To me, this highlights the

Has the tech industry SHUT its doors to HIRING?

Image
Let’s start by saying that, we’ve all heard the terms “the great resignation” and “recession” so many times over the past couple of years, to describe the ebb and flow in the tech industry when it comes to hiring trends. Here’s what we learned about how to navigate the hiring trends in this industry from our EITF experts - To begin with, this is not an uncommon situation.   Our experts say that a lot of them saw the recession coming, even during the great resignation period. So, how do you decide to make a job change without fear? Our experts say that although it is important to pay attention to the performance of a company, it is also important to pay attention to your performance. Shifting jobs, according to them, should be a personal decision with thought given to how a job can supplement your life, rather than the other way around. The second question we asked is, how do we prepare ourselves for a hiring shut down? Our experts say that the hiring never stops. Companies may close t

Is your job = to your career?

Image
We asked a lot of questions in season 1 of the EITF project which addressed different stages of people's career.  In your first job out of school, the thirst for knowledge, enthusiasm and the inherent need to prove yourself feeds your energy. On the EITF project, this is the reason we spoke about the “ first ” jobs that our experts have had. In more ways than one, the learnings from your first job and first manager usually shape your career going forward. But, there is also a tendency to lose yourself in your first job.   The need to build a career beyond that is usually a realization that hits everyone hard at some point, and it’s not easy to do- it’s a lot of extraneous work, and it has to have a lot of motivation behind it. So we figured, we’d ask our experts for advice - “ For someone who wants to work on something outside of their everyday jobs, first, should they? And if they should, where would be a good place to start? ”   To our surprise, the answers from our experts led u

Will you be replaced by ChatGPT-3?

Image
For this article in the EITF blog, we felt compelled to address the latest frenzy around chatGPT-3 and AI. Since January, everyone’s LinkedIn walls, including ours, have been spammed with mentions of ChatGPT-3 / AutoML. Most of them talk about how this shiny new development in AI could be the final say, in terms of replacing jobs and human resources.  There has also interestingly been an increased coverage in the media regarding ChatGPT-3 getting candidates through tough medical examinations. So we at EITF decided to try out and use ChatGPT-3. Our initial assessment is that, while tools like ChatGPT-3 / AutoML have their own advantages in human intelligence augmentation, their adoption in an industry setting will still have to wait for more maturity.  According to our evaluations, here are 5 reasons  why Generative AI tools like ChatGPT-3, BARD will take time to find adoption 1.        Bias:  A common pitfall in AI/ML is AI bias. This is a phenomenon when an algorithm is prejudiced d

Are you a manager? Why?

Image
In season 1 of the EITF project, we asked our experts what the transition from an IC (Individual Contributor) to a manager looks like. Here’s our general idea of where management stands today. If you look back to ten years ago, managers were mostly people who were promoted from within, and were uniformly excellent performers. Once promoted, they were expected to act as technical leadership for the team. Today, the definition of management has evolved quite a bit. Our experts from season 1 say that you can be a technical leader, but that doesn’t automatically make you a manager. Management requires a whole different set of skills.  To begin with, a notable change in function from IC to manager is that up to 80% of a manager’s day will be hands-off. Delegation is an art for managers. Management today involves learning all the methodologies and tools required - most technical teams use Agile and Zoom and Teams meetings to keep up with offshore teams. It also involves a lot of communicati
